The central concern of this article is to find the possible connections between covenant and creation in the priestly theology. Since G. von Rad in 1936, many scholars have read the Pentateuch, even creation stories, in the context of covenantal promise and fulfillment which are related to redemption. This assumes that the historical narrative in the Pentateuch is presented in the theological context of redemption.
Actually, the patriarchal stories are characterized by two motifs: the multiplication of descendants and the land of promise. These two themes which are related to redemption, however, share the same motifs in the creation account. The repetition of blessing which is expressed by "be fruitful and multiply" is same as the expression in Gen 1: 28. And the creation motif of "order from chaos" is also found in the Exodus story, a famous salvation story. In the Exodus story, the land of Egypt is changed to chaotic land in the time of 10 plagues and the wilderness is chaotic world. On the contrary, the Canaan is expressed as the land which flows with milk and honey that means the land of creation (Gen 1: 11-12). Finally, the priestly literary pattern of "word and fulfillment" in the Pentateuch is also a creation motif which is found in the creation account.
These creation motifs, such as blessing, order from chaos and the literary pattern of "word and fulfillment," are shared with God's redemptive-covenantal stories in the Pentateuch. This means that creation and covenant is closely related to each other and that creation provides the theological and literary framework for salvation history.
