The Gospel of Mark is to be discussed from the point of 'Son of Man Christology,' rather than that of 'the Son of God.' This character of the Christology in the Gospel does not simply explain the idea about who Christ Jesus is. One should be aware of that biblical gospels were generated in specific contexts and situations. Markan Gospel was written right after the Jewish War (AD 66-70). Due to the War, the Roman Empire was on the careful watch upon Jews and reacted sensitively against their social activities. The author of the Gospel realized need to establish right Christology for the sake of survival of his community, which was also under strict watch. Under this specific political factor, the Gospel of Mark emphasized the image of Jesus as the Son of Man who suffered and crucified, apart from 'the Son of God Christology.' In order to overcome the crisis in his community, Mark focused on 'the Son of Man Christology' that concentrates Jesus' suffering and death, avoiding to explicitly reveal the idea of Messiah, the Son of God leading rebels and struggles.
In addition, by emphasizing the Son of Man Christology, Mark also had an intention to create strong bond inside his community. Due to the Jewish War, Markan Community was in inactiveness with terror of death. Under this circumstance, Mark sets Jesus' way as the example for his followers to walk through with unshakable will. Jesus himself is a model and the symbol of the way. The Son of Man Christology is unfolded not in the later part but from the starting point of the gospel. Thus the Gospel of Mark reveals the motif of 'survival' of the community along with various theological issues. Mark explores toward the way of survival for his community by presenting implicitly and explicitly the Son of Man Christology focusing upon Jesus' suffering. The motif of 'survival of the community' is potential in Mark's writing from the viewpoint of the Son of Man Christology.
