This paper argues for the possibility of applying linguistics to teaching ESL or EFL writing. The purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical perspective of combining linguistics and composition pedagogy, and examples of applications of linguistics to the teaching of L2 (second or foreign language) writing. Specifically, after brief historical review of linguistics and composition, we explore not only syntactic approach but also semantic and pragmatic approaches with the concept of cohesion and coherence. We also compare English writing with Korean writing in terms of coherence in organization as an illustration. Based on the comparison, it is emphasized that for L2 literacy development, students need to draw upon their culture and styles. Finally, some pedagogical suggestions for teaching L2 writing with consideration of languages and cultures, such as incorporating students' native culture and past experiences into instruction, are provided in the conclusion.
