Yoo-keun(柳根) was a man of letters and government official in unprecedented Japanese Invasion of Korea(Imjin war). He was the best man of letter in that era. Because he had a excellent talent to become a man of letter. Especially, He took an important role in diplomacy with Ming-dynasty and used his talent in Japanese Invasion of Korea.
That experience was very helpful to overcome Japanese Invasion of Korea that was the hardest time of Korea. In this point of view, he got a huge trust of King Sun-Jo. In addition, he solved any assignments diligently and showed attitude as a reliable, loyal government official. He had a variety of achievement by perform a vassal of the king and important government officials. However, This paper will focus on achievements as a local governor among Yoo-keun’s achievements in Japanese Invasion of Korea.
Yoo-keun worked as a local governor for many times in Japanese Invasion of Korea. He took a governor in Hanyang(Seoul) and temporary official for people at the same time. Furthermore, He was a chief local governor in Kyung-Ki province, Chung-Cheong province twice respectively. Appointing him as a local governor had a purpose to handle opposite popularity and make people relieve after the war.
By the way, Relieving people is not only normalize people’s life but also build a basis which needed for performing missions in war. On the one hand, It is needed for collecting rice that is used during the war and making people working in agriculture, People also are military resources in the future. Therefore, He help people settle their land by producing a An-jib-do-gam(安集都監) and managing national land, constructing Dok-Sung mountain fortress(禿城山城). He contributed to colleting military power and training soldier. Mer that, He created a way to move supplement which needed in for performing assignments in war fluidly through making a waterway when he worked as a temporary construct supervisor. He strengthen defence of Kang-Hwa island(江華島) and found a way of defence in Kyung-Kang, capital city. As a local governor, He rebuild Chung-Cheong province after revolt and effort to make one of local defence ways in Strategical territory like Gong-San mountain fortress(公山城). We can find his efforts for relieving people who tired of war by Japan, exploitation and maintaining his country which was devastated by invasion of Japan, though his effort is innovative attitude to solve irony in that era.
In brief, His role as a local governor showed plainly society in Japanese Invasion of Korea and life about government official and a man of letter who lived in the hardest time of the Korean history.
