This article is purpose to illuminate the Byeonginyangyeo Incident with the new academic achievements. The Byeonginyangyeo Incident of 1866 was the first military conflict by which the French Empire had tried efforts to open the door of the Chosun Dynasty. Especially, throughout the Byeoninyangyeo Incident, the real leader of the Chosun Dynasty, father of the boy-king Kojong(1864 ~1907), Taewongkun demonstrated his strong hatred against the Western civilization by the stern military resistance and reminded the Western countries that the Chosun Dynasty was not belong to Chinese suzerainty.
In this aspect, we need to reevaluate his foreign and military policies; What are the real reasons why Taewonkun oppressed Catholic Christianity so strongly? What are the direct causes which produced the Byeonginyangyo Incident? How can we reestimate the military capability of the Chosun armed forces which resisted to the French armies? What are the main reasons why the French armies had to retreat so suddenly, and How can we review the result of the Byeoingyangyeo Incident etc.
Consequently, we argue that the Byeoingyangyeo Incident was not marked as a great victory for the Chosun armed forces.
