A lane departure warning system, similar to other warning systems for safer driving, should be properly tuned to maximize its effectiveness. This study investigated the effect of warning device location and warning activation time on the effectiveness of lane departure warning, using a driving simulator. The first driving simulator experiment showed that the dashboard was the most effective location of the warning device among the dashboard, the center console and the space above the center console. The next experiment showed that warning activation based on the time to lane crossing of 1.5 seconds are more effective than 1.2 and 1.8 seconds.
