The main purpose of this paper is to examine the task and prospect of Korean public schools regarding their religious education. The author acknowledged two plausible tasks as for the current issue. Que is related to the schools internal variables, e.g., students, teachers, parents, etc. The other has to do with improving the external variables such as politics, economy, socio-cultural environment and so forth. Some suggestions were made in this article. First, the logic or rationale for the religious education in the public education sphere must be sought. Second, the terminology confusion between religious education and religious missionary work needs to be clarified Finally, the author argued that public school education should be free from the religious missionary work for the sake of its autonomy. Considering the Korean society"s growing need for multi-religious community, religious culture rather than religious belief must be formed through education. Furthermore, the Korean citizen"s consciousness for the need of religious education will systematically be promoted by the continuous efforts of the government and religious agencies including religious society, institute and schools.
