This thesis is dedicated to verifying the cognitive status of irregular Korean roots int the mental lexicon through the psychological experiment. A lexical decision task using some irregular roots and related complex forms as stimuli was performed and statistic analysis and morphological explanation about the results from the experiment are like below. First of all, irregular simple roots such as ‘훌륭-, 알뜰-, 보슬-’ have independent lexical representations in the lexicon just like their related complex words, on the other hand ‘착-, 아름-, 오솔-’ don’t have independent lexical representations. These are caused by the semantic independence of roots and type frequency of the roots in the lexical system of Korean. Secondly, All of irregular complex roots such as ‘바람직-, 달콤-, 달짝지근-, 푸르스름-, 푸르스레-, 푸르무레-’ have their independent lexical representations in the mental lexicon. But some of the related complex forms like ‘달짝지근하다, 푸르스름하다, 푸르스레하다, 푸르무레하다’ proved not to have their independent lexical representations in the mental lexicon. Those complex forms are recognised as syntactic structure-like units by the subjects of the experiment. It was due to the adverbial properties of the roots, ‘달짝지근-, 푸르스름-, 푸르스레-, 푸르무레-’.
