The maritime sector in East Asia, one of the world’s most vibrant economic regions, has experienced tremendous development in recent times. Many ports in this region have seen an increase in their throughput as a result of the enhancement of their competitiveness and capacity to cater to growing regional maritime trade and economic growth in their host countries. The region’s leading shipping lines have expanded their capacity to handle bigger volume of seaborne trade, while its shipyards have enjoyed full orderbook for several years ahead on the back of growing global demand for shipping services and new tonnage. It would be useful to observe the experiences of nations in the region - namely China, South Korea and Japan, three of the world’s major maritime nations - which have done very well to develop their maritime infrastructure and enhance their maritime competitiveness. Other aspiring maritime nations would do well to draw lessons from the maritime development strategies adopted by these countries and emulate their methodical approach in developing their maritime industry towards enhancing their own competitiveness in this sector.
