Today, social and economic growth in Korea has rapidly and certainly changed. However, suicide rates in Korea has been marked on one of the highest ranks in OECD member countries. My concern in this essay is with an investigation of Durkheim’s sociological explanation of suicide and its social interaction, and then his analyzation of religio-moral treatment. If that is so, I will suggest any possible justification and responsibility of social ministry of the Church about one of the social problems which Korean society faces.
Durkheim’s study of suicide is a good illustration of the significance of nonmaterial social facts in his work. In his basic causal explanation changes in nonmaterial social facts ultimately cause differences in suicide rates. He differentiated among basic three types of suicide: (1)egoistic, (2)altruistic, (3)anomic. And he showed how each is affected by different changes in social currents.
Durkheim’s study of suicide was taken as evidence that sociology has a legitimate place in the social science, that is the study of “social fact”. On this basis Durkheim attempted to deal with his interest in common morality and religion in various ways with different concepts. He sought to show the root of religion in social structure of society and he invested some concerns of collective morality in order to present the function of morality, religio-moral solidarity in a society and moral education. If so, I am convinced that the Churches in Korea have to focus on their social ministries for not only individual action but also social interaction in order to treat the social causes of suicide.
