This paper is trying to give people a brief overview of the life of the poet Wang Yu-yang (Shizhen) in China’s Qing Dynasty, and his poetics, his “charm”, based on previous studies based on previous studies, being focused and discussed on the social and political background, and poetry and poetic theory background. Yuyang’s whole life has been mainly immersed with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism through his spiritual world, the Confucianism has given him a proud attitude and success towards the official exams, and also a smooth-going path towards officialdom. The Taoism and Buddhism has made him release the soul, given him a lifetime of charm of the poem’s beauty and the mingling with spirit realm. He likes landscape, is very honest in the officialdom and lives an easy-going life. His spiritual essence of personality has given us a feeling of less desires and aloof from politics and material pursuits. The study of “charm the soul” is strongly connected and can not be avoided with the political and social relations with early Qing Dynasty.
With the preliminary economic development and prosperity, the full restoration of agricultural production and certain degree of handicrafts development, China’s last feudal era of peace and prosperity of the prelude began. These were fully indicated in Yuyang’s “charm” style poetry and revealed signs of the times.
Yuyang dominated poetry corresponding to his “charm” and relevant poetry, using his special way to declare the coming of the time of Kang, Yong, and Qianlong era. The “charm” style belongs to the traditional poetry in Tang Dynasty, with natural description as the backbone, not belonging to mainstream of the Seven Poets. From the inner logic of poetic development, the emerging of “charm” style had close relations with the poetic theoretical background during late Ming and early Qing dynasty.
