Proverbs is a rhetorical strategy employed by the Yoruba and some other tribes to express their experiences in a more condensed and effective manner. It is believed to be an exclusive preserve of elders who are regarded as repository of wisdom and propriety. Whenever proverbs are used, they are supposed to perform certain functions, hence this paper tries to investigate some functions performed by proverbs using the speech-act and conventional implicature theories. Six categories of speech-acts identified in this paper are adjudication, expressing facts, warning/admonition, giving advice, issuing threat and giving directives.
