This paper presents how Korean adult learners define their identity through learning English as a second/foreign language. Through a disguised interview with 10 Korean students studying at the University of Hawaii, the research found: 1) that most of the participants went through quite similar experiences in terms of identity development through their learning of English, such as being overwhelmed by the requirements and pressure of English from Korean society and its educational system, suffering from lack of confidence in their
language proficiency, and being frustrated due to lack of their own serious necessity or goal to learn another language, 2) that the participants reached the common conclusion that learning another language had contributed to widening and developing their critical view of the world, and 3) finally, that the participants were clearly aware of their growing and changing identity. These results reaffirmed Cummins (1996) and Norton (1997), suggesting several important issues regarding what should be seriously considered for improvement in second language education.
