This comparative studyanalyzed the MBA programs between the Korean and the German Graduate Schools of Business(GSB). To perform comparative analysis, the 5 leading Korean Graduate Schools of Business and the 5 leading German Graduate Schools of Business were selected. The research was performed by web-based survey and by telephone. The comparison criteria were admission, duration of education, academic language, tuition fees, curriculum and international accreditation. Major results are as follows:
For admission in the German GSB, the GMAT score, the letters of recommendation by professors and CEOs and English essays played an important role. The average duration of education in the German MBA programs(13.4 months) was shorter than that of the Korean MBA programs(18 months). The academic language in the German MBA programs was English, while the academic languages in the 3 Korean MBA programs were Korean and English. In addition, the average tuition fees in the German MBA programs(49.32 million KRW) were more expensive than that of Korean MBA programs(31.80 million KRW).
In terms of curriculum, the cores(15.4 subjects) and electives(10.6 subjects) in the German MBA programs are much more than that of Korean cores(9.4 subjects) and electives(9.8 subjects). The specialization courses in the Korean MBA programs were much more than that of German MBA programs. Additionally, the master thesis was needed for graduation in the GSB at Korea University in Korea as well as in the GSBs at Mannheim, Frankfurt and WHU Otto Beisheim GSB in Germany.
With respect to international accreditation, the 5 German GSBs and the 3 Korean GSBs except for Sogang University and Sungkyunkwan University obtained AACSB. And the GSB at Korea University in Korea as well as the GSB at Mannheim University and WHU Otto Beisheim GSB in Germany acquired EQUIS. Only the GSB at Mannheim University obtained AMBA.
