? Kim Geuk-gi was born in the period of military dominance in the Goryeo dynasty. At that time, the literati were suffering from the tyranny of the Military government. After passing the Certified Advanced Scholar (進士) exam in his thirties, he led a nomadic life in nature for ten years. Then, he was given his first government position in his forties.
??He reached back to the life of the wanderer and created the poems reflecting his thoughts regarding nature, a sense of history, rural life and etc.
??Among the famous Chinese poets, Kim Geuk-gi mentioned Li Bai (李白), Du Fu (杜甫) and Su Dongpo (蘇東坡) in a couple of times. Especially, he designated Tao Yuan Ming as Tao Ling (陶令), Tao Weng (陶翁), Tao Yanming (陶淵明), Wu Ling Ren (武陵人) and Yan Ming (淵明) in his poems. Kim Geuk-gi admired Tao Yuan Ming’s spirit emphasizing the delight of rural life and the truth of life by static description.
??Kim Geuk-gi’s poems were influenced by Tao Yuan Ming’s “Ode of Returning” (歸去來辭), “The Fifth Drinking Song” (飮酒其五), and “Returning to Country Abode” (歸園田居). From one of his poem, “East Forest Temple” (東林寺), he was supposed to be affected by the anecdote of White Lotus Fraternity (白蓮結社’s 故事) which is the group of hermits (隱士) including Tao Yuan Ming.
