This thesis is designed to explain the communication methods that Korean native speakers use to communicate indirectly within their communication by using what is known as Natural Semantic Meta-language(NSM). NSM can explain the forms of indirect expression used within Korean language using analysis based on semantic primitives that consist of the simplest and general concepts associated with words. NSM is also useful to explore the sophisticated contexts of Korean language using objective and non-English-oriented perspectives.
This study divides indirectness into the two categories; non-language based communication and language based communication. In this study, the Korean concept of ‘Nunchi’ is explored as a concept to conceptualize non-language based communication. ‘Nunchi’ alludes to subtle messages conveyed non-verbally that indicate perceptions of mood, state of mind or a wider context of a situation. These subtle messages can be skillfully projected and also be skillfully received and interpreted. Therefore, the two expressions ‘projecting Nunchi’ and ‘reading Nunchi’ are used to articulate how subtle non-verbal messages are conveyed in Korean communication culture.
Furthermore, Korean perceptions of indirect speech acts are employed to interpret the language based communication which is the most observable segment of the communication as a whole. In order to explain indirectness that appears in fixed linguistic expressions, the study explains the meaning of three expressions by using NSM linguistic theory. These three are ‘N 같은 것’ (kattunkes) for indirect expression based on similarities, ‘거시기’(kesiki) for the indirect expression based on substitution and ‘괜찮다’(gwaenchanta) for indirect expression based on vagueness.
