This thesis examines the The Walls of Rumor by Lee Cheong-Jun to critically review the relationship of his writing style, characters, and the narrative structure(1971) with his theory (of novel) called “The Practice of Post-Power.” It will proceed with discussion about the basic structure of his novels and characters as well as the relationship of his characters to consider how repression plays a critical role in reality through the analysis of the pathological aspects of the protagonist represented in the horror of the flash light. I will demonstrate how the formal characteristics in this novels such as multi-layer structure, detective writing technique and etc contribute to his literary works under the premise that the novel The Walls of Rumor should be the one that allows free communication and freedom in order to justify his critical stance on repressive regimes and rumors.
The general understanding of the structural aesthetics of his novels is that it is the essential factor that renders his novels ‘open-structure’ or ‘reflective’ ones, but the two elements, that is, multi-layer structure and detective writing technique, stop short of making them ones that have open-frame structure or pluralistic voice(or polyphony) even though they function as a literary device that reveals the author’s sincere and serious attitude. it is reinforced through ruminating and intensifying narrator’s statement, character’s dialogue of reinforcing and repeating writer’s statement, overissue of chance, attempt to pierce you want to align the inevitability coincidence, typical and flat characters’ personality, a clear structure of right and wrong. It is true that The Walls of Rumor is the novel that asks us not only to explore the problems of writing, but also to rethink about life through a series of questions such as ‘Why we write’ or ‘What novels mean to us,’ but his serious and sincere attitudes prevent his novels from succeeding in encouraging active participation of readers and make his novels unsuccessful attempts to fulfill the polyphony and openness of his theory.
