In Lee chung-jun’s literary works, nature such as birds and trees isn’t separated from human’s real life and they also can be understood on the view of nature within Confucianism, especially ‘humans in nature’ or ‘the harmonious unity of nature and humanity(天人合一)’. Birds and trees in Lee chung-jun’s works are the important images as well as motives to effectively explain an inquiry on the value of Idealism which he seeks for.
In “Bird and Tree”, a bird and a tree present the relationship between a host and a guest, a son and a mother, and a city and a hometown. They here are not just a simple natural objects but the figuration of thematic thought based on ‘benevolence(仁)’ and ‘compassion(??之心)’. The birds in “Cruel City” are reflective in circumstances of unfortunate modern humans who have lost the freedom and nature. In Lee chung-jun’s works, birds and trees are embodied dramatically in the value of artistic spirit and craftsmanship. In “Seonhakdong Traveler”, ‘the flying crane(飛翔鶴)’ is reminded of Korean traditional view of nature and art that merges into the Korean way of life to be one with nature. Lee chung-jun’s novel, Your Paradise, is searching for the political social ideal through the form of allegory. ‘Paradise’ can be realized by only the politic of ‘benevolence(仁).’ Lee chung-jun’s works therefore describe the virtue of Confucian moral culture(修?) which is the right thing to do as a human through the scene of making art with tree roots in Your Paradise and the consistent figure in “Old Pine” like an evergreen tree which symbolizes natural order of sincerity.
