This experimental study explores the Korean EFL learners’ perception and production patterns of English pronouns with consonant deletion in the stress-timed rhythmic structure of connected speech. The four monosyllabic personal pronouns (i.e., he, her, his, them), usually unstressed and linked with surrounding stressed content words after the loss of the intial consonants /h/ and /ð/ in English connected speech, were used in this study. The data were collected in two ways: a) the 48 college students" transcription and b) the acoustic analysis of 37 college students. The research findings show that the students in general have trouble recognizing the spoken form of the words which is usually different from the written citation form. Also, the research findings show that almost all the students were not successful in properly deleting the initial /h/ or /ð/ and tended to pronounce the words in isolation as the spelling appears. According to the findings, this study suggests that the students" errors are considered to arise from the lack of proper instruction for the English stress and rhythm, and therefore the prosodic features as well as the word knowledge or syntactic structures must be given critical importance for successful communication in spoken English.
