This study reviews the foundation process of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History (NMKCH) and its exhibitions, in order to transform a government-controlled institution into one for democratic society.
The foundation of the NMKCH was dependent on political decision and intervention rather than on social consensus and academic needs. There are various problems with exhibitions of the museum: (1) history of the national growth of Korea is shown in terms of a myth of ‘success’, (2)emphasis on orthodoxy and a condensation and distortion of the national ideal envisioned for establishing of a national history, (3) lack of information on unification and awareness of the division of Korea, and (4) denigration of democracy to the political system. These problems stem from a careless combination of the ‘New Right’ and ‘Old Right’ historical consciousness.
NMKCH demonstrates that South Korea is superior to North Korea in terms of achieving industrialization and democratization at the same time. It promotes social integration and future pride in Korean society. However, NMKCH is limited in that it does not integrate public opinion and academic views. This has negative social side effects as there is no reflection of peoples’ self-introspection and the progress of internal diversity, as a way of integration.
Therefore, the NMKCH needs to be reviewed in terms of its operational goal and exhibition of its resources.
