The object period of the 3rd and 4th Exhibition Hall of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History is from 1961 until the present day. This interval is an ongoing period in which the memory and experience of people who live today exist together, while the issues of economic development, democratization and south-north relations are in sharp contrast. The 3rd Exhibition Hall deals with the theme of ‘economic development and industrialization’ using an elaborate exhibition technique in a very large space. However, it is difficult to understand each theme and the history of events because of poor exhibition content. The basic problem is that the exhibits do not differentiate period and the constitution being separated into industrialization and democratization. In addition, there is piecemeal historical material dealing with specific subjects to show the achievements of government and private enterprise. Some exhibits in the 3rd and 4th Exhibition Halls are only there to publicize government achievements and it is difficult to understand why they should be displayed and what their significance is. Since a museum should be politically independent, the exhibition themes of the 3rd and 4th Exhibition Halls should undergo a complete reconstitution by including criticism from academics. Meanwhile, academics should have more interest in and awareness of the history and education aspects of museum. Citizens should also be more active thinking so that they can provide their comments and views, sympathetic or critical, on the exhibits.
