The purpose of this study was to investigate relations among physical education teachers’ role stress, teacher encouragement, and burnout, test the effects on teacher burnout with the mediating elements of relations among the variables and teacher encouragement, and search for solutions for teacher burnout. A total of 250 physical education teachers working for secondary schools in Seoul City, Gyeonggi Province were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The research findings were as follows: First, there was a low level of significant positive correlation between the role stress and burnout. Their teacher encouragement was in significant negative correlations with role stress and burnout. secondly, teacher encouragement had explanatory power for teacher burnout. Also, it was found that the teacher encouragement moderated the relationship between physical education teachers’ role stress and their burnout. These results indicate that the teacher encouragement is an important factor in reducing the burnout of physical education teacher.
