The purpose of this study is twofold:
(1) To present grammatical features of Dghwede, Guduf and Gvoko, three hitherto hardly studied minority Chadic languages spoken in Northeastern Nigeria.
(2) To define their linguistic relationship on the basis of lexical and grammatical comparison. While all these languages have been classified by Newman (1977/2009) as belonging to the Mandara group of the Biu-Mandara branch of the Chadic family, their mutual linguistic relationship is still far from clear, which is largely attributable to a lack of data for these languages.
In this sense, this study is intended to be an analytical description of grammatical data of these three languages collected by the author in Nigeria and thereby also purports to dicuss classificatory issues from different but complementary perspectives.
Following a brief introduction to the languages under study as well as some methodological issues, section 2 deals with a lexical comparison between the languages to assess their mutual linguistic relationship in terms of lexical affinity. Also conducted here is a comparison between Proto-Chadic and these languages in order to examine phonological changes occurred in this group.
Next comes a description and presentation of grammatical features of these languages, providing their salient morpho-syntactic characteristics in a contrastive linguistic way.
In the last section I summarize and evaluate the results of the preceding sections, on the basis of which the possibility for a new subclassification of the group is proposed.
