This paper investigates the effect of the manner and place of articulation and voicing on vowel duration, comparing Korean and English speakers’ production. This paper shows that English speakers tend to show longer duration before fricatives and voiced consonants than before stops and voiceless counterparts, respectively, which supports the results of the previous studies. Regarding the place of articulation, vowel duration tended to be longer before alveolars than before labials, based on the overall mean duration. Korean learners’ production also showed the same tendency. However, many of their pronunciations depended on words regardless of the manner and place of articulation and voicing. This may be due to no voicing contrast in syllable-final stops and no syllable-final fricatives at the phonetic level in Korean.
