This essay is aimed at describing the trends and prospects for education of the Korean dictionary, focused on the curriculums and textbooks. I divided the Korean educational curriculums and textbooks into four stages identified by Jeong Jun-seop(1995) and Yun Yeo-tak(2005).
The first curriculum(established and announced in 1955), utilized the dictionary in elementary school and middle school. The Korean unabridged dictionary(so called URIMAL KEUNSAJEON) was published by HANGEULHAKHOI in 1957. The dictionary compilation was started in 1929 by JOSEONEOHAKHOI. And the publication was completed in 1957. The first curriculum and textbooks was reflected the value and meaning of the dictionary. The second and third curriculum’s dictionaries education were similar to the first curriculum period.
But the fourth curriculum was selected, and arranged these educational items into third and fourth grade in elementary school. The contents were meant only for searching for words. The fifth curriculum was similar to the fourth.
The sixth curriculum and textbooks were not changed. But the seventh curriculum was changed. This curriculum was for selecting and arranging these items into elementary school and middle school. As a result, the textbooks reflected various utilizations for the dictionary.
But 2007’s curriculum and 2009’s curriculum returned to the former styles of curriculums. Nowadays the age of the electronic dictionary. I suggest that the curriculum contains dictionary utilization especially of the electronic dictionary for reading, writing and grammar domains. And I desire that these contents are selected and arranged for elementary schools and middle schools.
