This paper reports the results of an auditory comprehension study that examined prosodic effects on resolving the ambiguity of participle constructions in English (e.g., Aaron followed a poor guy drinking his soda). Test sentences were played to 52 native speakers of English in two prosodic conditions, one with an Intonation Phrase boundary right before the ambiguous participle phrase (late IP) and the other with the same prosodic boundary in some earlier locations than right before the participle phrase (early IP). After hearing one prosodic rendition of each test sentence, listeners answered a comprehension question regarding the agent of the ambiguous participle. Results showed that the early IP condition was effective in biasing listeners toward the low attachment reading of the participle. It was found, however, that the effect of the late IP condition was not as effective as the early IP condition. Possible reasons for this differing effect of the IP boundary were discussed in relation to infrequency of the high attachment reading in spoken context and the inherent bias of the participle phrase toward the low attachment reading.
