The Fanyilaoqida and Fanyipiaotongshi(Fanyilaopiao) were the Mandarin textbooks that had published in the sixteenth century. In these books each Chinese character was given two readings right below it: in left-right transcription, the left reading was the Chinese standard one (Chinese reading in Tongkao) and the right reading was the Chinese popular one (Broad transcription). This paper focuses on studying the several problems in the transcription reflected in the Fanyilaopiao. This paper also aims to study the following problems: First, it will discuss several problems concerning the retroflexion and the ?z ending. Secondly, I will study the ?w ending in the entering sound rhyme “Yao-yun(藥韻)” in connection with Chinese plosive ending change. Finally, I will examine the final reading reflected in the Fanyilaopiao by comparing the differences between the left reading and the right reading. These problems constitute very valuable data for looking into the characteristics of the left-right reading reflected in these books. The results of such a study will also throw great light on the study of the Chinese historical phonology.
