This study concerns the asymmetry of English dative constructions and its relevance to End-Weight Principle. For the study, 30 English native speakers and 55 Korean high school sophomores were required to perform two tasks with five dative verbs (GIVE, HAND, BRING, SEND, SELL): a preference test and an acceptability judgment test. The native group is used for the confirmation of the end-weight principle effect and also used as a reference group to compare with the L2 group. The results of the experiments are as follows: First, in the preference test, English native speakers preferred Prepositional Dative(PD) to Double Objective Dative(DOD) constructions in sentences with ‘long Recipient" argument phrases. In contrast, when sentences contained "long Theme" argument phrases, native speakers showed a preference for DOD constructions. In the acceptability test, English native speakers rated the acceptability of PD constructions above that of DOD in sentences with long Recipient argument phrases. But, in sentences with long Theme argument phrases, they rated the acceptability of DOD as equal to or higher than that of PD. On the other hand, Korean high school English learners showed no asymmetrical preference based on the principle of end weight; In the acceptability test, they rated PD as more acceptable than DOD in dative constructions regardless of the length of their post-verbal argument phrases. This evidence suggests that Korean learners’dative constructions in English are mainly unaffected by the principle of end weight, unlike those of native English speakers: it could imply pedagogical need for guiding awareness of the end-weight principle for Korean learners of English.
