The expressive writing was advocated by Peter Elbow et al. since the 1960s to overcome the limits of the writing method by formalism which is oriented to teach the grammar and the style. The expressive writing tasks are helpful to decrease the freshman"s anxiety as a "academic I" overlapped by a "physiological I" just came into the academic discourse community.
This study is aimed at revealing the efficiency of the expressive writing, especially the "personal statements" task when it is performed in the beginning of a semester. The order of this task was designed considering the expressive cognition factors, such as expressionist subject, task object, context, kairos, and topos. Bergson(1896) gave the idea to combine his conic diagram and the expressive writing factors. By this diagraming, Bergson had symbolized the transferring process from the pure memory to the perceptible representation, which is proper to represent the cognitive process of the subject"s performing the expressive writing task.
As the result of this study, I have found the ideal structure of the "personal statements" writing task with 4 contents; the impressive introduction, the motive for applying, the related careers, and the positive prospect of one"s own or the target group.
