There was intimate relation between two art worlds of China and Japan when the National Fine Art Exhibition of Republic China was established. Although Ryu Haisu was influenced by Cai Yuan-pei, he seems to suggest the establishment of fine art exhibition by the government from the affection of Japan after his visit of Japan in 1919 while 1st Imperial Exhibition of Fine Art was held. National Fine Art Exhibition of Republic China has similarity with Domestic Exhibition of Industry in Japan 1877 in that it was planned for the comfort of people during the civil war, and had genres of exhibition which were composed of traditional painting and calligraphy, western style painting, sculpture, architecture, crafts, photography, and epigraphy. The fact that Japanese 82 artists submitted works for the National Fine Art Exhibition of Republic China also explains the cordial relation between Japan and China. Therefore, it is necessary to consider this intimate relation for understanding of complex situation of fine art in modern East Asia nevertheless the political and military tension.
