This study looked into how the royal lecture has changed when it was implemented from the end of the 15th century to the middle of the 16th century. After that, the historical meaning was analyzed.
The royal lecture which had the King sermon the issues and discuss the state affairs with the national servants progressed much more in the Choson Dynasty. At the end of the 15th century, the royal lecture was almost complete in terms of its policy. It became one of the most important daily schedules for the King. Accordingly, there were many cases where the important national affairs were discussed and processed.
However, as King Yeonsankun claimed the throne, the situation seriously worsened. A clash occurred in the royal lecture site when the issue of succession of the ealry King’s accomplishments was discussed. Based on the principle, the royal lecturers claimed that the precious academics should be succeeded. However, the King claimed that the servant’s ideology of the monarch should be re-instated. The clash within the royal lecture spreaded over to the whole national operations. At last, the clash between the two parties exploded and the contest came to a halt in 1504.
In 1506 when a new King was throned, the royal lecture was re-instated. However, the King and the royal lecturers clashed again soon. Cho Kwang-Jo who represented the royal lecturer claimed that in terms of correcting the wrong doings of King Yeonsangun, the wrong policies of the past should be reformed. Among them included the tasks of King Sejong and King Seongjong. On the other hand, the newly throned King Jungjong claimed that only the recent ones should be corrected. In 1517 when Cho Kwang-Jo was assassinated, it all collapsed.
The royal lecture continued even after the assassination of Cho Kwang-Jo. However, as it focused on discussing national affairs and having the discussions over academics shortened, the status of the royal lecture plummeted. By having Confucian scholars like Lee Hwang participate, it tried to put in some vigors. They started to participate in the royal lecture from the middle of the 16th century. The royal lecture was able to progress into a new direction ever since.
