This article is written to find that Buddhism was still dynamic and powerful until Sun-jo season by researching religious policies. Neo-confucianism was ideologic and religious foundation in Chosun dynasty, and king and retainers had to have knowledge of neo-confucianism. Especially Sa-lim seized power after overcoming four massacres in Sun-ju season. So the viewpoint of other religions of king and retainers became background of religious policies. Sun-jo had moderate view about other religions in his earlier season. When Japanese Invaded Chosun in 1592, he leaned on buddhists, and buddhist monk soldiers entered war, performed meritorious deed, So his view point of Buddhism became softer than ealier season, After finishing Imjinwaeran(임진왜란, 壬辰倭亂, Japanese Invasion of Chosun in 1592, religious terrain) his view became more conservative than before. It is because of he wanted to enforece his power. On the contrary to this retainers has seldom changed their viewpoint of other religions.
Buddhism policies in Sun-Jo season can be disentangled controlling and admitting buddhism. Policies controlling buddhism are stopping buddhism rites, prohibition for buddhist monks to enter the capital. Policies admitting buddhism are protection believing buddhism of royal family, rewarding buddhist monk soldiers, remaking buddhist official position. Especially policies admitting buddhism are more at Imjinwaeran than the other season in Sun-Jo season. It means that the establishment changed their religious policies because of their benefit.
Buddhist accepted religious policies, so they made buddhist monk troops in Imjinwaeran voluntarily. It was not only because of patriotism but also because of their own benefit. And they resisted against buddhism policies. So some of them participated rebellions which broke out in Sun-Jo season. It means that buddhism still had organizational, wealthy, force power in Sun-Jo season.
