The purpose of this article is to review researches on Korean religions and to explore its tasks. To do this, in the 2nd and the 3rd, I reviewed researches in ‘Korean Journal of Religious Studies’, “Journal of New Religions”, and a series of studies on Korean religions. And I presented several tasks relating researches on Korean religions in the 4th.
Researches on Korean religions are necessary in order to rebuild the materials for religious studies and to understand the present situation in Korean religions. Until now, however, researches on Korean religions have been concentrated on limited religions, contemporary times, doctrines, and religious literatures. In contrast, some researchers have explored religious distinctiveness in the context of Korean histories, rejecting apologetic hermeneutics for particular religions.
Researches needed in individual dimension are as follows. First, researchers need to study more than one religion. Second, researches on Korean religions in modern times should be attempted actively. Third, researchers should have various perspectives to research doctrines including the other topics. Fourth, researchers need to take advantage of various methodologies in the study of religious organizations. Finally, ranges of religious denominations and religious topics should be expanded and developed.
Researches needed in the dimension of the academic community are as follows. First, we should develop various training programs to train subsequent researchers. Second, we should leave religiographies through the long-term participant observation. Third, we should investigate the present situation of Korean religions periodically, using members of academic institutions. Fourth, we should have a database of various materials related to Korean religions. Finally, we should describe the religious histories in Korea, related to religious organizations.
As pointed out earlier, researches on Korean religions are the basis for constructing the materials for religious studies and understanding the present situation in Korean religions. In this sense, those must also be important for the theoretical development of religious studies in Korea. I hope this study will be helpful for researches on Korean religions in future.
