This paper investigated the criteria and issues of selecting reading materials for Korean textbook. They are informational text, which are contrasted with the literature texts. Specially, the roles of materials in reading education history, survey of reading materials before and after 2007 curriculum, analyzing the government’s criteria for materials, and issues related materials are investigated.
The role of reading materials are changed historically. Texts were very important from 1st to 4th curriculum, but their role were weakened 5th curriculum, and reenforced with the 2007 curriculum. The role of reading materials could be categorized with implementing leaning objectives, model of good texts, materials for character education, and building community literacy. The quantity of reading materials decreased, and the quality got worse in high school reading textbooks.
It is needed to simplify the selecting criteria of reading materials, and make it as a law. Issues such as the suitability, censorship, revision, media, and integration of text are developed. Solving directions of these issues are proposed.
