Park Eun-sik, who is the founder of Korean modern nationalist history, is a chief editor of Hwangseongsinmun 皇城新聞, and wrote an article to put importance in national history and to urge positive recognition of the history of Balhae. Based on such experience, he focused on writing ancient history, including Balhaetaejogeongukji 渤海太祖建國誌 and later continuously quoted Balhae related to the purpose of the writing from Hanguktongsa 韓國通史.
Park criticized the history (text) books of the time through the writings however, he is also influenced by it. As looking through his comments concerning the history of Balhae, it could be figured that he referred to Donggungnyeoksa 東國歷史 of Hyun Chae (玄采), Daehangangyeokgo 大韓疆域考 of Jang Ji-yeon (張志淵), Dongsa-Jimnyak 東史輯略 and Yeoksa-Jimnyak 歷史輯略 of Kim Taek-young(金澤榮). However, they were not enough to contain study results of the history of Balhae that the best history books in Chinese characters at the time had established. He had a continuous interest in the history of Balhae, so he found the new materials while he was in exile in China and quoted it to Hanguktongsa`
