The “Aubrac affair”, which began by the publication of Gerard Chauvy’s book titled “Aubrac, Lyon in 1943” in April 1997, ended with the conviction of Chauvy and the publisher “Albin Michel” for defamation of the Aubracs, French Resistant heroes in April 1998. However it ended only judicially, and all the suspicions over the conducts of the couple in 1943 were not dispelled.
A round-table forum organized by a daily “Liberation”, in which the Aubracs and historians participated on May 17, 1997, whose minutes were published in this daily on July 9 of that year, had even greater effects than the judicial judgement. Neither the Aubracs, nor the historians in the round-table, nor other historians were satisfied with the results of discussion. All of them responded with perplexity, disappointment, and fury.
Both the “Jean Moulin affair” four years earlier and the Aubrac affair reflected the public disillusion with a Resistance myth on one hand and the power of anti-Communist discourses on the other hand. But whereas the Jean Moulin affair had not longer continued because of Thierry Wolton’s deficient historical method, the Aubrac affair was not entirely solved. The round-table that was supposed to clear away mistrust regarding the affair, on the contrary, prolonged it by amplifying the suspicions against the Aubracs, in spite of the reject of the supposition that they might be double agents of the Gestapo.
