“The Records of the Visit by Joseon Envoys(朝鮮信使來聘記錄)” is Japanese literature that records a visit by Joseon envoys in 1711. This paper aims to examine envoy costumes for different ceremonies by referring primarily to these records, in addition to other costume-related literature. The result can be summarized as follows.
Entering Edo, an envoy party would wear black-colored Ceremonial Robes (Dalryeong), Korean Full-Dress Attire(Dopo), Military Officer’s Robes (Cheolrik) and Battle Dress (Kwaeja). The color and material of the Dalryeong were differentiated according to grade, and could include a glossy dark green-colored cloud-patterned Daedan, a dark blue-colored pattern-less Sa, a black-colored thin silk, a glossy dark green-colored thin silk, a green-colored sheer silk and a glossy dark green-colored ramie cloth. Dopo, Cheolrik and Kwaeja were made with dark blue-colored sheer silk, Bangju and Sa.
Delivering the king of Joseon"s state letter and receiving Japanese reply letter, Samsa (three envoys) wore a golden crown, a scarlet-colored sheer silk court dress, a silver-decorated belt, a waist jade, an ivory Hol and Heukhwaja, while Sangsanggwan wore Osamo, a glossy dark green-colored cloud-patterned Daedan Ceremonial Robe, a silver-decorated belt and Heukhwaja. Attending a banquet at Edo Castle, Samsa and Sangsanggwan wore Osamo, a glossy dark green-colored cloud-patterned Daedan Ceremonial Robe, a silver-decorated belt and Heukhwaja.
According to “The Records of the Visit by Joseon Envoys”, members of an envoy party were differentiated according to grade, which included Gwan, Lip and Jeonrip, with each wearing an appropriate hat. In terms of costume, records on Osamo, Ipsik, a court dress, Military Officer’s Robe and Military Officer’s Hat corresponded with the system in the late Joseon Dynasty period. Meanwhile, the records on Gwandae, Dopo and Rank Badges show differences from the domestic system.
