This study aims to verify if there are any differences in `help-seeking` behaviors in the workplace between two different cultural groups: Latin Americans and Koreans. We attempt to explain the cause of distinctive patterns of `help-seeking` behaviors between the two groups (Latin American employees vs. Korean employees) via the explanatory concepts of `face` and `in-group`. The social and psychological cost of `help-seeking` corresponds to the risk of `losing face`, which is estimated as a higher risk for persons within the Korean culture as compared with those in the Latin American culture. Also, the differing conceptions of `in-group` between the two groups affects two further distinctions in the help-seeking behaviors that are displayed: the type of help that is sought as well as the person to whom the request for help is addressed. Based on cultural differences in face and in-group (e.g., Bargiela-Chiappini 2003; Osland et al. 1999), we provide four propositions: 1) the Korean employees are less likely to seek help than the Latin American employees; 2) the two groups would show differing degrees of help-seeking behaviors according to the type of help they are seeking; 3) the boundaries of `in-group` are different in the two cultures; and 4) Latin Americans are less sensitive to the loss of face than Koreans. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
