This study analyzed how sports major students in local universities perceived the reality of lives according to their status, causes of their drop-out, their psychological reactions to drop-out, anticipated problems after drop-out, plans for second life and institutional support programs realistically necessary for them with the inductive method. The analysis results on data about drop-out via individual interviews are as follows:
First, the lives of sports major students in local universities have four spheres of inferior circumstance, difficulty in getting a job, identity crisis and passion for performance. Second, causes for drop-out of sports major students in local universities were divided into both external and internal causes. Third, their psychological reactions on drop-out have three spheres of anticipation, anxiety and acceptance. Fourth, problems anticipated after their drop-out have two aspects of social circumstance adjustment and getting a job. Fifth, for plans for second life, there are two dimensions of self-development and challenge for life. Finally, institutional support programs realistically necessary for them were divided into three spheres of support, adjustment and career education.
Accordingly, the study expects to prevent school quitting by many sports major students with drop-out in advance and to contribute to fundamental changes of the system to embrace them as important members of our society by perceiving and understanding their realities focusing on sport major students in local universities unlike previous studies.
