This paper contrasts the strategy of responding to compliments of family members with the information from 1,163 Korean and Japanese from a sociolinguistic point of view (period of survey: May-September 2013). The following conclusions are the summary of the contents.
(1) 70% of Koreans reacted with acceptance, 17% denied, and the rest (10%) deflected or provided no answers, compared with 55.7% of Japanese answering with acceptance, 27.3% denying, and the rest (17%) deflecting or provided no answers.
(2) The accepting strategy is taken with a higher ratio of gratitude and pleasure from women than from men in most of the scenarios in both countries.
(3) Korean middle-aged women reacted most actively to the compliments of family members, showing a higher ratio of acceptance than rejection in all scenarios.
(4) Japanese turned out to accept compliments about ability and skills more actively than about appearance, compared with the hierarchy awareness of Koreans, which turned out to be much higher than that of Japanese in terms of strategy to react to compliments and other verbal behaviors.
