The purpose of this article is to understand the city of Harbin as Heterotopia in the frame of Foucault"s discussion. The conception of space has been changed from ancient to modern, plane to multiple system. Nowadays the conception of space is becoming more important than time consuming. Foucault suggested three conception of spaces, ‘Imaginary space", ‘Phenomenal world" and ‘Utopia". Heterotopia, according to Foucault, could be understood as the ‘Imaginary space", "Phenomenal space" "Transition space" and also "spaces for making of differences".
Harbin as a space is the ‘deterritorialized space" for Chinese and ‘a line of flight" for Russians and ‘expression of arising desire" for Japanese. Besides, the territory itself always belongs to China, but the control of power has been ruled by Chinese, Russian, Japanese and Chinese Communists in the course of a hundred years. In a larger perspective, Harbin has experienced all the stresses and strains associated with China"s modern transformation, but to an exceptional degree. Harbin has been transformed to ‘the Third Space" to produce a ‘New man" and a ‘New mankind" on the basis of various migrates.
This study doesn"t intend to redefine and rediscover the history of Manchurian in the perspective on the basis of positive study, but to light up the Mancjurian history on the different historical perspective according to the conception of Foucault"s Heterotopia, through the space phenomena of the ‘Night School", ‘Brothels", ‘Labour Movements" in Harbin. In conclusion, this article would suggest that Manchuria is not any more ‘the inanimate space but ‘the vigorous and vital space" than any other spaces. I would suggest that on the occasion of gaining a new interpretation on the history of Manchuria, the world can be filled with ‘histories", not ‘the History". Furthermore, East Asia and the world can be placed with more justified and impartial angle in history. With our endeavors and efforts to interpret and discover behind meaning of histories, we would have accomplish the real “Flat World”.
