This paper considers the social and economic concerns motivating the mid-Victorian foregrounding of the image of the improperly public woman who resembles the prostitute. It examines the connection between the economic and the erotic in mid-Victorian discussions of Prostitution in Gaskell`s and Dickens`s novels of the mid-1850. It maps out the ideological space in which the body of the prostitute becomes the meeting place of Eros and commerce. The interconnection of the economic and the erotic in the rhetoric of prostitution provides a means for managing mid-century, middle-class anxieties regarding class conflict. The novels discussed in this paper represent but also function to screen a crucial contradiction in mid-nineteenth-century attitudes toward property-owning. While laissez-faire economic philosophy invited all to own property, the middle classes feared the working-class desire to become property owners alongside them. Mid-nineteenth-century discourse about prostitution removed the potential threat of working-class desires to own property both by defining some desires to possess property as stealing or appropriation. Dickens`s and Gaskell`s novels conclude by allowing the body of the “fallen” or potentially “fallen” women to become the center of the reader`s attention. This attention directed at the woman serves to displace all questions concerning class inequality.
