This study sheds light upon the Introduction of Literature, one of the main lectures at college during the liberation period, in order to take a look at the establishment and systematization of modern literature as an academic subject. Approaching the topic, first, the college system in the liberation period was defined and the curriculum for modern literature was analyzed so that the actual correlation with the introduction of literature would be studied. Second, based on the result of the analysis on the curriculum, the texts for the introduction of literature used at college were analyzed for defining the concept of modern literature as knowledge system.
At that time, the curriculum for modern literature subject had two subcategories of composition technique and introduction of literature. It is very important to study the academic significance of modern literature, which is produced at college, in order to study the introduction of literature subject, among the modern literature courses. The introduction of literature was the course for enhancing the status of modern literature in the close context of college system, as well as for Korean literature that discussed the norms of literature.
During the liberation period, Baek Cheol, Hong Hyomin, Park Yeong Hee and Kim Kirim wrote the textbooks for the introduction of literature. All these books were written to be used at college lecture. The authors began to think of a scientific system for the textbook, while writing one. What was noteworthy was that they tried to find the definition of Korean literature, in addition to establishing the theoretical system for general theories of literature. The characteristic of liberation period literature is focused on finding the originality of Joseon, based on the scientific system. Therefore, it can be interpreted that the knowledge system of literature in the liberation period had the logical attitude focusing on methodology and the attitude of pursuing historicity and originality of Korean.
