The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of weight training on muscle strength, area of the muscle and fat tissue of the mid-thigh, body composition, and blood lipid concentration in old men. Eight healthy old mace subjects (age range 65-75year) participated in a 12week weight training program (12-15 RM/set; 3sets/day; 3day/week, 9 exercises). Subjects were evaluated before the program and after 12 week of training. The results of the study were as follows: 1. Muscles strength increased after weight training program (31-40%, p$lt;0.05). 2. The area of the muscle tissue in right mid-thigh increased (143.8±11.9 vs 148.8±11.9㎠, p$lt;0.01) but that of the fat tissue decreased (60.4±11.3 vs 51.1±9.7㎠, p$lt;0.01) when measured by CT. 3. Percent body fat and body fat mass decreased 1.4% and 0.9kg, respectively(p$lt;0.05) and fat free mass increased by 1kg(p$lt;0.05). 4. HDL-C concentration increased (43.1±3.5 vs 50.8±.69mg/dl, p$lt;0.05) and ratio of TC/HDL-C decreased (4.5±0.5 vs 3.9±0.6, p$lt;0.05) but there was no changes in TC, LDL-C and TG. These results indicate that older men can safely participate in total body weight training program with positive outcome in muscle strength, muscle hypertrophy, body composition, and blood lipids. These changes would be helpful in retarding deleterious aging process in the elderly population.
