This study was to investigate the changes process of Ssireum in historical periods The purpose of this study is to provide the basis of the changes process how Ssireum, which is widely interested and loved by our Koreans has changed and developed up to the present based upon periodic and social background. Ssireum was originally carried out as the fighting as the means of existence to survive the right with wild beats and other tribes or the martial arts for self-defence. It has gradually developed into the military entertainment with the intellectual, emotional, social development of human beings. The oldest data about Ssireum can be found in Kakjeohchong in 1905, which is the tomb of Ssireum in Tonggu Hwando, Jiban District, Tonghwa Province in Manju which is the old capital city of the Kokuryeo Dynasty. Also, the first official record on Ssireum can be found in Koryeosa which is edited by king sejong in the 15th Century of Korea. These information proved that Ssireum of Korea have existed in the early period of the Three Kingdoms. Ssireum had settled down as a folk sports which is as entertaining to it`s participants as it is to the spectators. It changes suddenly by passing through a process of matching, which is the characteristic of modern sports, and the series of modernization processes with culture and periodical growth. Also it changes and develops as a popular spectator sports spread everywhere by succeeding to traditional physical training culture and body senses by providing match up to the form a given condition of an era and the stream of society. Ssireum has further developed by establishing the Joseon Ssireum Association in 1927. It had been renewed Daehan(Korea) Ssireum Association in 1946 and made an association agreement and an umpire agreement for the match to intensify management. So Ssireum was an exhibition game in the 28th National Athletic Meritocrat in 1947 and a formal game in the 29th National Athletic Meritocrat in 1948. There was a big conversion of Ssireum in 1972 with the growth of the economy in 1960`s and 1970`s after liberation from Japan. the first KBS-CUP National Grand Championship was held at Jangchung Indoor Stadium under joint sponsorship by KBS, which is the leader of modernization boom of Ssireum, and Daehan Ssireum Association. Ssireum had continuous popularity until late 1970`s. it seemed to be stagnated after the late 1970`s and it became a popular sport after the first Universal Hercules Contest was he이 at Jangchung Indoor Stadium in April 14th, 1983 with policy of sports encouragement by starting the 5th Government Republic. Therefore, the Korea Ssireum Association merged with the Korea Folk Ssireum Committee in 1983 but they were divided into the Korea Folk Ssireum Committee which is for professional competitors and the Korea Ssireum Association which is for amateurs in February, 1992. Professional Ssireum became a popular professional sport after 1983 and developed quantitatively by expanding up to 12 professional teams. In 1997, Koreas`s Currency crisis led to the disorganization of 6 teams over 2 years by disorganizing teams in a series by companies because of strengthened competition and corporate restructuring. As the result of the moment of crisis, there is only 4 of Professional ssireum teams. but recently there is only 3 of professional Ssireum Teams which are LG Investment and Securities Ssireum team, Hyundai heavy industry Ssireum team, Shinchang Rhinoceros Ssireum.
