Outwardly, the people in the shipping industry are aware that multicultural working environments and conditions could have a strong influence on the operation of ships. With a lack of cultural awareness and foreign language skill of crew members on ships, there are lots of misunderstandings and miscommunications among (cross-cultural) crews. Even currently, more and more maritime accidents are caused by human error in the world’s oceans. Nevertheless the research on cultural diversity and human interaction on ships is still in its infancy. Due to the rapid change of the demographic make-up of crews, not only teaching and training technical skills for the crews, but also education in nontechnical skills such as cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, intercultural competence is urgently needed. For the latter one, it is therefore indispensible because a multicultural and multinational ship’s crew is an irreversible trend in the globalized maritime labor market. This trend is also facilitated by shipping companies who are preferring to recruit seafarers from various nationalities and building multicultural teams on board ships due to the commercial pressure.
This paper is dealing with cultural issues on ships. Therefore, it aims to emphasize the necessity of cultural interaction studies on ships as well as to provide its research direction. In order to fulfill its purpose this study will give an overview of the current state of research into the interaction between the multicultural as well as multilingual crews on ships. Based on an extensive literature review on the cultural issues of maritime manpower with a strong focus on the working and living conditions, and management of shipping crews, this study tried to investigate how the crew members on ships deal with the rapidly increased diversity, and how the shipping industry and the maritime institutions want to cope with the newly established situation in terms of the demographic change in the labor market. The analysis of previous studies in this field reveals that the shipping companies are not aware of managing multicultural human resources in the maritime industry. It goes without saying that the shipowners and shipping companies in Korea are gradually employing diverse seafarers with different national and cultural backgrounds because of endless competition with other shipping companies in the world. Consequently, this study will encourage the cultural studies on dealing with cultural issues and managing diversity among crews on ships.
