This study investigates semantic constraints on coercion by using corpus data and a survey of acceptability judgments. Coercion is defined as the resolution of semantic incompatibility between a construction and a lexical item that occurs in the construction (Michaelis, 2007). This study attempts to find general semantic factors across constructions that are considered important to determine the verbs that can occur in the constructions and general semantic constraints for coercion. The constructions examined were English ditransitive construction (DC) and caused-motion construction (CMC). I first observed the semantics of these constructions and various verbs that have different degrees of semantic compatibility with the construction. Then, in order to see which verbs are more frequently used in the constructions, I conducted collostructional analysis (Stefanowitsch & Gries, 2003). I also obtained the acceptability judgments patterns of English sentences where various verbs are used in the DC and the CMC, and analyzed the semantic interaction between the verb and the construction when coercion occurs. As a result, the number of participants in the prototypical event scene of a verb is important to determine whether the verb can easily occur in the construction. Also, the implicit meaning of the construction (e.g. benefactive meaning in the DC and direct causation of motion meaning in the CMC) influences on the preferred semantics of the participants (e.g. the DC prefers a person and the CMC prefers a location as an endpoint). Even though there are detailed differences depending on the meaning of individual verbs, the generalized semantic condition highlights that the number of participants and their characteristics are salient in human cognition.
