The strong educational aspiration of parents can be attributed in a large part to the credential practices widespread in the society, including employment, marriage, and informal interpersonal relationships. During the rapid growth period of economic in Japan, the educational aspiration was over-heated. But educational aspiration seems to be ‘cooling-out’ in 1990s. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of the stratification phenomenon of educational aspiration in Japan and to suggest implications of Korean education.
In Japan, there appears a stratification phenomenon of the entrance examination system and educational aspiration. The intensity of aspiration for college degrees, the degree of dependence on college degrees, and the patterns of the real support put into practice vary depending on the socioeconomic background of family. When their children become the senior of junior high school, some parents of children with high academic achievement, particularly affluent parents, are considering of sending their children to academic track so as for their children to go to colleges. Upper classes set the high expectation level for their children’s final educational achievement. Working class parents know that college degrees are important to their children’s future, but they don’t know how to support their children’s academic success. They show the tendency of preferring vocational track over academic track.
This study suggested the roles of schools and government for normalizing public education in Korea.
During the Rapid Growth Period of Economic in Japan, the educational aspiration was over-heated. But by the social-economic change, the lowering of the Credential value and the Track system of entrance examination, the Japanese educational aspiration seems to be ‘cooling-out’ in general. According to the Biopolarization of Society, the educational aspiration is stratified in Japan.
