This essay investigates how Richard Powers reconfigures through his fifth novel Galatea 2.2 the status of literature in the “postfictional age.” Powers stages the crisis of literature by making his autobiographical narrator in writer’s block confront a technoscientific environment in which he has to teach literature to a neural network. But while teaching the network, the narrator realizes that he ought to revise his old understanding of literature to meet the needs of the technoscience culture. Paying attention to Powers’s insight into the interconnectivity between literature and technoscience, the essay argues that he proposes literature and technoscience as a co-producer and co-keeper of metaphor or knowledge for our age.
