Analyzing Richard Powers’s thirteenth novel Bewilderment (2021), this essay investigates how the novel suggests posthuman ontology and ethics in a post-anthropocentric view. The novel foregrounds ecological concerns on endangered plants and animals through its characters, Alyssa and Robin, who are able to communicate with other species and grieve over their losses. The communication with other species in the novel is presented to describe a being’s ontological condition of ecstasy, or being beyond oneself, signifying the existence of otherness within oneself. Through the ontological condition of ecstasy, Bewilderment claims zoe ethics as posthuman ethics that concedes the ontological relationality among all living beings and their equal vulnerability, seeking to suggest a possibility of a post-anthropocentric community to actualize the ethical drive.
